I wanted to provide an update regarding Violence against women and girls, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Following concerns raised by residents regarding the safety of women and girls on and around Tooting Bec Common, South Balham Safer Neighbourhood Team recently carried out a dedicated Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) operation on 25 August 2026, working alongside neighbouring Safer Neighbourhood Teams.
VAWG remains a key priority for the Metropolitan Police Service, and Tooting Bec Common has been identified through crime reports and intelligence as an area where offences such as harassment, catcalling and indecent exposure have occurred. In response, officers conducted a proactive operation aimed at identifying offenders, gathering evidence and providing reassurance to those using the Common.
The operation involved plain-clothes officers deployed within hotspot areas identified through intelligence and crime analysis. Throughout the deployment, officers worked together to identify and tackle offending behaviour while maintaining a visible commitment to keeping the area safe.
Results of the Operation
The operation delivered positive outcomes, including:

✅ 2 Community Resolutions
✅ 2 Arrests for Outraging Public Decency
These results highlight the value of proactive, intelligence-led policing in addressing offences that disproportionately affect women and girls and contribute to fear of crime within our communities.
CID Investigation Update
We would also like to share a recent outcome achieved by colleagues from CID in relation to a series of offences that caused significant concern locally.
Between June and August 2026, a male repeatedly attended a public car park within the South Balham area late at night and committed indecent acts. Despite returning to the same location on several occasions, the male remained unidentified.
On 21 August 2026, officers responded to a 999 call from a member of the public reporting that the same individual was again committing an indecent act.
Officers conducted an immediate search and successfully located the suspect nearby. Following his arrest, officers worked quickly to secure further evidence, including witness accounts and digital enquiries. As a result of the investigation, the male was charged and remanded to court for three counts of Outraging Public Decency relating to offences committed between June and August 2026.
This result demonstrates the commitment of officers and detectives to identifying offenders, safeguarding victims and ensuring those responsible for such behaviour are brought before the courts.
