E-bikes and e-scooters are increasingly popular, but faulty or improperly charged lithium-ion batteries can pose a serious fire risk.

Help keep your home and community safe by following these tips:

✅ Use the manufacturer's charger and battery wherever possible.

✅ Never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight while you sleep.

✅ Charge batteries on a hard, flat surface and keep them away from exits, hallways, and combustible materials.

✅ Avoid buying cheap, unbranded, or second-hand batteries that may not meet safety standards.

✅ Stop using the battery immediately if it becomes damaged, overheats, emits an unusual smell, or shows signs of swelling.

✅ Do not store batteries in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.

✅ Ensure smoke alarms are fitted and tested regularly.

✅ Dispose of damaged batteries safely through approved recycling centres.

If a battery catches fire, leave the area immediately, close doors if safe to do so, call 999, and do not attempt to tackle the fire yourself.
