Back to school safety

As children head back to school after the summer holidays, we would like to remind parents to speak with their children about staying safe while travelling to and from school.

Unfortunately, some young people can become targets for robbery, particularly if they are carrying expensive items such as mobile phones, headphones, designer clothing, jewellery, or other valuable possessions.

Please encourage your child to:

✅ Stay alert and aware of their surroundings.
✅ Keep mobile phones and other valuables out of sight when not needed.
✅ Avoid displaying expensive items in public.
✅ Travel with friends whenever possible.
✅ Stick to well-lit, busy routes and avoid shortcuts through isolated areas.
✅ Trust their instincts and move to a safe place if they feel uncomfortable or threatened.
✅ Report any suspicious behaviour to a trusted adult, teacher, parent, or the police.

A message for young people:
Your safety is more important than any possession. If someone attempts to take your belongings, do not put yourself at risk by resisting. Try to remember what you can about the person and report it to the police as soon as it is safe to do so.

Parents are encouraged to regularly discuss personal safety with their children and ensure they know who to contact if they ever feel unsafe.
