I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road safety issues (Speeding), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. 🚦 Community Speedwatch – Making Roads Safer
Kent Police runs Community Speedwatch, a volunteer-led initiative focused on reducing speeding and improving safety. What is Speedwatch?
👥 Local volunteers, trained by Kent Police, monitor speeds at approved sites (20, 30, or 40 mph zones) using certified equipment.
📋 Details of speeding vehicles are securely logged for 12 months. Repeat or excessive offenders may receive advisory letters—and in some cases, personal visits from officers. Important:
Speedwatch is educational, not enforcement. No fines or penalty points are issued directly, but the data helps target police action and inform road safety improvements. ✅ Does it work?

It was clear from the discussions that speeding and anti-social driving continue to have a significant impact on residents across the ward. Concerns were raised about vehicle speeds, driving standards, and the effect this behaviour has on community safety and quality of life.
The key locations highlighted were Barnes Car Park, Royal Esplanade and Garlinge High Street, alongside a number of other areas where residents feel road safety could be improved.
I want to reassure residents that these concerns have been listened to and will be reviewed alongside our partner agencies. As your local Beat Officer, I will continue to gather information and intelligence regarding speeding and anti-social driving, and I intend to conduct targeted speed checks and patrols where appropriate.
I would encourage anyone who witnesses anti-social driving or persistent speeding issues to continue reporting them. Reports provide valuable information that helps identify trends, direct enforcement activity, and build a clearer picture of the issues affecting our community.
Reports of anti-social driving can be submitted to Thanet District Council, as well as being reported to Kent Police where offences are occurring. The more information that is provided, including vehicle details, times, dates and locations, the better equipped we are to tackle the problem together.

The scheme allows concerned local residents to assist Police in a meaningful way and really make a difference. For anyone who is interested I strongly urge you to register so a scheme can be set up.
For my part I will be aiming to increase Police presence to deter these gatherings and inconsiderate driving, carry out further speed check days to increase road safety and I will be talking to Thanet District Council to gather how they can assist.
