Here’s the latest update on bike theft in your area. 🚲 Stolen Bike Recovered and Returned to Its Owner! 🚲
Local officers have arrested one male on suspicion of handling stolen goods. He was taken into custody and dealt with, following the recovery of a pedal cycle believed to be stolen.
Thankfully, the bike had been registered on BikeRegister, which allowed officers to quickly trace the rightful owner. The owner confirmed the bicycle had been stolen from the Camden area several weeks ago.
Today, we were delighted to reunite the owner with their bike, who was able to ride it away from the police station after being without it for several weeks. This is a fantastic example of how bike registration can make all the difference when recovering stolen property and returning it to its rightful owner.
🔒 Protect Your Bike from Theft
Bike theft remains one of the most common crimes affecting cyclists, but there are simple steps you can take to make your bike a much harder target for thieves:
✅ Double-lock your bike using two different types of locks, such as a Sold Secure Gold-rated D-lock and a heavy-duty chain.
✅ Always secure the frame and both wheels to a solid, immovable object.
✅ Position D-locks tightly around the frame and stand, leaving as little empty space as possible.
✅ Face the lock's keyhole downwards to make tampering more difficult.
✅ Keep locks off the ground to prevent thieves using the pavement to assist in breaking them.
✅ Check that the bike rack or signpost is secure and cannot be removed or lifted over.
✅ Register your bike for free on BikeRegister, the UK's national cycle database.
✅ Record your frame number and consider security marking valuable components with a forensic marking kit or UV pen.
✅ Take removable accessories such as lights, pumps, GPS units and saddle bags with you.
🚨 If your bike is stolen:
📞 Report it immediately via 101, or 999 if the theft is in progress.
📋 Obtain a crime reference number for insurance purposes.
🔍 Check online marketplaces such as Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and eBay, and report any suspected sightings to the police rather than attempting to recover the bike yourself.
Registering your bike only takes a few minutes and can make a huge difference in helping us return recovered bicycles to their owners, as demonstrated in this case.
