Protest due to take place in Tamworth this weekend

Officers will be deployed proactively in Tamworth this Saturday (12 September) at a pre-planned protest in the area.

We recognise that events of this nature can cause concern for businesses, employees and customers. We would therefore like to provide reassurance that Staffordshire Police, Tamworth Borough Council and partner agencies are working closely together and have extensive plans in place to maintain public safety and minimise disruption wherever possible.

We will work to balance the rights of the protestors against the rights of those affected by it, which includes minimising the impact of disruption to local businesses, the community and the road network.

Our plan for the protest on Saturday has been put in place in response to intelligence, engagement with protest organisers and the local community.

We expect the protest to follow a procession route. It is expected to begin at Tamworth Railway Station on Victoria Road at 12pm and will likely follow a route indicated in the image below:

.Victoria Road, Heath Street, Alexandra Mews, Albion Street, Marmion Street and the pedestrianised section of Bolebridge Street will be closed between 1pm and 2pm to vehicles, although officers will do their best to minimise the impact by only closing for the time required to allow for the procession to pass. 

Church Street between the junction with Corporation Street and St. Editha’s Square, along with St. Edithas Close will be closed between 6am and 4pm to vehicles. 

Our priority is public safety. The right to protest peacefully in a democracy is important but it is also important there are consequences for those who break the law.

Appropriate policing and stewarding arrangements are being developed to support the safe management of the event.
