🚨 Public Notice: Urgent Crime Prevention Advice Following Daytime Burglaries

Location Focus: Broadway / Junction of Lydia Becker Way / Hunt Lane,  Chadderton

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are requesting residents to exercise heightened vigilance following a series of recent daytime burglaries in the Broadway and Hunt Lane area of Chadderton.

Opportunistic criminals are targeting residential properties during daylight hours, often exploiting brief windows when occupants are at work, running errands, or routine lapses in home security. GMP is actively investigating these incidents and increasing local patrols, but community intelligence is vital. We need residents to look out for one another and report any unusual activity immediately.

📋 Key Security Measures to Take Now

To protect your home and deter potential offenders, please implement the following security protocols:

Enforce a Strict Locking Routine: Ensure all front doors, back doors, and ground-floor windows are locked at all times. This includes times when you are inside the property or just stepping out into the garden. If you have PVCu doors, always lift the handle and turn the key to engage the multi-point locking system.

Remove Temptation from Sight: Keep high-value items such as car keys, cash, laptops, tablets, and jewellery completely out of sight from windows. Never leave vehicle keys near the front door or letterbox, as thieves use hooks to steal them.

Secure the Boundary: Keep side gates locked with high-quality padlocks to prevent access to the rear of your property. Ensure garden tools, ladders, and wheelie bins are securely stored away so they cannot be used by a burglar to climb or force entry.

Create the Illusion of Occupancy: When leaving your home unoccupied during the day, leave a radio or television playing softly. Consider using smart plugs or timer switches set to turn lamps on as daylight begins to fade.

Utilise Home Security Technology: If you have a burglar alarm, activate it every time you leave the house. Ensure video doorbells, CCTV systems, and motion-activated security lights are clean, fully operational, and positioned correctly to capture boundaries.

We are asking the community to remain alert to behaviour that feels out of place for the neighbourhood. Please take note of:

Individuals loitering in the area, looking closely at properties, or walking down side paths/driveways without a clear purpose.

Unfamiliar vehicles driving slowly up and down Broadway or Hunt Lane and Lydia Becker Way, or parked up for extended periods with occupants inside.

Cold-callers or individuals knocking on doors offering unsolicited property maintenance services, which can sometimes be a tactic to scope out a home.
