Protecting Every Member of Our Community – Even the Smallest

Following reports from concerned residents and visitors to the ward, officers received information and video footage relating to the sale of small animals on the street, with concerns raised about their welfare and the conditions in which they were being kept.

Officers from Tooting Broadway Safer Neighbourhood Team, working alongside the RSPCA, subsequently attended an address in Lambeth as part of an investigation into suspected animal welfare offences.

One person was arrested and has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.

During the visit, three hamsters were rescued from the property. Officers found them living in poor conditions, with cages containing rotten food and a significant build-up of waste.

The hamsters were taken to #MedivetCamberwell, where they were examined and cared for by the veterinary team overnight while a suitable rescue placement was arranged. There was already a noticeable improvement in their condition following treatment and care.

We would also like to thank #IndiasHamsterRescue, who stepped in to provide them with a safe and suitable home while they continue to recover. Having seen their new enclosures ourselves, we’re pleased to say these three are now in very good hands — and hopefully it won’t be too long before they are ready to find their forever homes. 🐹🏠
