What is a Bogus Trader?

A bogus trader is someone who pretends to be a legitimate worker, tradesperson or representative of a company in order to gain access to your home or obtain money, valuables, or personal information by deception.

A male and female suspect speak to a victim by telephone claiming to be from a gas company.

A short time later, a male suspect attended the address and gained entry to the property under this false pretence. Whilst pretending to conduct gas and heating checks, he moved around the house and jewellery was subsequently stolen.

This incident highlights the importance of checking utility company representatives identity.

How to Protect Yourself

To reduce the risk of becoming a victim:

✅ Always ask for identification and check it carefully.

✅ If someone claims to be from a utility company, close the door and contact the company using a trusted telephone number to verify the visit.

✅ Use a door chain or door viewer where possible.

✅ Never let unexpected callers into your home.

✅ Do not feel pressured into making immediate decisions or payments.

✅ Consider asking a friend, family member or neighbour for advice if you are unsure.

✅ Keep valuable items, cash and jewellery stored securely and out of sight.

✅ Report any suspicious callers to the police.
