Keyless car theft

Hello Resident,

We have had a couple of reports around Didcot of suspicious activity involving cloning car key signals on keyless entry and start vehicles, and wished to share some advice!

Across Oxfordshire we are aware that suspects are attending car seller's home addresses and will ask, or start to connect to motor vehicles via Bluetooth or other sources. This can allow a someone to access the car system with specific apps that will give them the ability to clone the key signal, and access your car at a later date.

If you do have a keyless car, we recommend:

Looking at Faraday pouches that help to secure your keys and block the signal leaving the pouch, making it more difficult to copy. We usually have some available at our have your say events!

Not allowing potential car purchasers to connect to your car's Bluetooth or other internal sources

If you think that your car may have been targeted recently:

Call 101 or make a report via our webform service with any details that you have from a potential buyer

Enquire with your nearest car brand specialist garage to see if there is any malware downloaded on the car

If possible park your car in a secure location or blocked in by other vehicles

As ever, remain vigilant! We only learn of these behaviours from your reports to us!
