To ride an e-motorbike legally

An e-bike can be a great way to get around uni, but if you’re buying it second hand, make sure to keep an eye out for illegal modifications.

Anyone over the age of 14 can ride an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC - see the rules at the link below) on the road or cycle path. We recommend wearing a helmet, and staying off the pavement.

But it can be very dangerous if illegal modifications have been made, for instance by removing the pedals from the drive train and having a throttle or a motor that assists over 15.5mph, then it is classed as an e-motorbike.

To ride an e-motorbike legally, you need a valid licence, insurance, tax, registration and you must wear a motorcycle helmet.

Be wary of what you are buying, and from whom. Save your money.
