🧠World Alzheimer’s Day – Supporting Those Living with Dementia |

|
Today, 21 September, marks World Alzheimer’s Day, raising awareness of dementia and the millions of people affected by it around the world. Dementia is more than memory loss. It can affect a person’s thinking, communication and ability to manage everyday activities. For those living with dementia, and the families, friends and carers who support them, understanding, patience and compassion can make a significant difference. This awareness day reminds us that small actions can have a big impact. Taking time to listen, showing empathy and offering support helps create a more inclusive and understanding community. One simple but important step is completing the Herbert Protocol for someone you know who lives with dementia or may be vulnerable to going missing. The Herbert Protocol is a form containing vital information about a person, such as their routines, favourite places, medical needs and emergency contacts. If they are reported missing, this information can be quickly shared with police and partner agencies, helping to reduce risk and assist in locating them sooner. The profile can be completed at your own pace and updated whenever necessary. Safe and Found also encourages users to review their information regularly to ensure it remains current. Stephanie Ough, Safeguarding and Partnership Manager, said: "The Herbert Protocol is a fantastic initiative aimed at safeguarding some of the most vulnerable in our communities. By providing important information in advance, it enables police and partners to act quickly if someone goes missing, helping to reduce risk, as well as bring peace of mind and reassurance to families and carers."
