Recent Jewellery Thefts Update

We are aware of the concern caused by a recent series of jewellery thefts affecting members of our community, and we want to reassure residents that we have been taking proactive action to tackle these offences.

We have carried out a number of targeted operations which have resulted in 8 arrests linked to these offences, and 6 people being charged and we have seen no recent reports of this type of crime in the area.

Residents should, however, remain vigilant. A common tactic used in these offences, often referred to as a "blessing scam" or "blessing robbery", involves an offender approaching a victim in a friendly manner and offering a gift. They may place a cheap piece of jewellery, a scarf or an amulet around the victim's neck while engaging them in conversation. During this distraction, the offender secretly removes and steals the victim's genuine, high-value jewellery before leaving the area.

While these crimes are not unique to London and have been reported internationally, we are committed to making the area as hostile as possible for offenders through continued enforcement and partnership working across the Metropolitan Police Service.

Please be cautious if approached by strangers offering gifts or attempting to place items around your neck. If something does not feel right, move away and report any suspicious behaviour to police.
