Over the past few days, we have received a number of reports of individuals deliberately discharging fireworks in an anti-social manner. This behaviour is not harmless fun. It can cause significant fear and distress within our communities, particularly for young children, elderly or vulnerable residents, and animals.

The police have a range of powers available to tackle this type of behaviour and, should it continue, please be assured that those powers will be used where appropriate. In the first instance, I would like to make residents aware that your area has been identified as an Operation Brightsparx hotspot, meaning it will receive increased patrol activity throughout identified hotspot times As a result, you may notice a greater visible police presence in the coming weeks in the lead up to Bonfire Night.

We will not hesitate to issue Community Protection Warnings and take further enforcement action against those found to be engaging in this nuisance behaviour and in some cases against the parents of young people engaging in this behaviour. Where offences are identified, we will pursue all proportionate measures available to bring this anti-social behaviour to an end.

We encourage anyone who witnesses this type of behaviour to report it to police. If a crime is in progress, or there is an immediate risk to life, property, or public safety, please call 999. By working together, we can help keep our communities safe and ensure fireworks are used responsibly and lawfully.
