🚔 Anti-Social Vehicle Use – Know the Risks 🚗⚠️

Middlesbrough South Neighbourhood Policing Team is raising awareness of powers available to tackle anti-social vehicle use across our communities.

👮‍♂️ Police Officers and PCSOs can use powers under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 and the Crime and Policing Act 2026 to deal with vehicles being used in a way that causes, or is likely to cause, alarm, distress or annoyance to members of the public.

Examples include:

🏍️ Off-road bike nuisance
🚗 Careless, Dangerous or inconsiderate driving
🔊 Vehicle-related anti-social behaviour affecting local communities

⚠️ Important Change in the Law

Since 29 June 2026, officers no longer need to issue a Section 59 warning before taking action.

✅ Vehicles can now be seized immediately where the legal threshold is met.

This allows police to respond more quickly to anti-social vehicle use and better protect local communities from nuisance and harm.

🚨 What Could Happen?

If your vehicle is seized, you may need to:

📄 Prove ownership of the vehicle
🪪 Provide valid identification
🚘 Show a valid driving licence (where applicable)
✅ Provide proof that the vehicle is insured and roadworthy
💷 Pay recovery and storage charges

⏳ Vehicles not collected within the required timeframe may be sold or destroyed.

Additional Consequences

Vehicle seizure may be accompanied by further action, including:

📝 Traffic offence reports
💷 Fixed penalty notices
⚖️ Prosecution for road traffic offences
🚔 Seizure under other legislation where appropriate

Middlesbrough South Neighbourhood Team will be actively using these powers where appropriate to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour involving vehicles and improve the quality of life for local residents.
