Tenth arrest in attempted murder case

A tenth man has been arrested in connection with an attack in the Moreton Hall area of Bury St Edmunds earlier this year.

Police were called at just before 10.15pm on Sunday 22 March to reports of a serious incident in Mortimer Road.

A man aged in his 40s was found to have sustained stab wounds and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victim spent several weeks in hospital before being well enough to be released.

On Thursday 10 September police arrested a 46-year-old man from west London on suspicion of attempted murder. He was transported to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning and subsequently released on bail pending further enquiries.

In early April, following police enquiries, Sebastian Smith, aged 47 and of Radford Road in Lewisham, was charged with attempted murder. He is currently remanded in custody awaiting trial, which is due to begin on Monday 11 January 2027.

A 28-year-old man from Bury St Edmunds who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on 30 March will face no further action and has been released from police bail.

Three men arrested on suspicion of attempted murder between March and May– aged 45, 26 and 25 – all remain on police bail.

Four further men arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in August – aged 59, 51 and two aged 19 – also remain on police bail.
