More than 500 bikes seized during summer crackdown on illegal riding

More than 500 bikes have been seized by officers this summer as part of a crackdown on the anti-social and illegal use of off-road bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters, quad bikes and motorcycles across the region.

Operation Hurricane is our dedicated, coordinated effort to tackle the misuse of these vehicles, which continues to cause significant disruption within communities, affect quality of life and pose serious risks to the public.

In total, officers seized 503 bikes, made 25 arrests, issued 116 traffic offence reports and served 11 Section 59 warnings.

In some cases, the anti-social and dangerous use of these vehicles has resulted in serious injuries and fatal collisions, with devastating consequences for victims, their families and local communities.

Officers from our Roads Policing Unit (RPU), Drone and Motorcycle Unit, National Police Air Service (NPAS) and neighbourhood teams targeted hotspot locations throughout the summer to deter, detect and disrupt offending.

Working closely with partners, officers have used intelligence to identify areas of concern and respond effectively to reports from the public.

Alongside robust enforcement, we are working with partners to educate young people about the risks and encourage parents to understand the law before buying these bikes for their children.

"If you choose to ride one of these bikes illegally on our streets, you can expect it to be seized. If you're thinking of buying one, make sure you know exactly where it can legally be ridden before making that purchase."

The key peak season may have ended, but enforcement activity will continue, with officers using intelligence from communities to identify offenders and target hotspot locations.

Residents are encouraged to report incidents involving the anti-social or illegal use of bikes, e-scooters and quad bikes so action can be taken.
