You spoke, we listened
Many residents across Altrincham have raised concerns about speeding vehicles in their neighbourhoods and asked how they can play a more active role in making our roads safer. Today, I am delighted to announce the launch of a new Community Speed Watch Scheme for Altrincham.
This is an exciting opportunity for local people to work alongside Greater Manchester Police and play a direct role in improving road safety within their community. The scheme will begin on a small scale in identified priority locations, with plans to expand into additional streets and neighbourhoods as it develops.
Community Speed Watch empowers volunteers to become part of the solution. Following training, volunteers will work in small teams using speed detection equipment and high-visibility clothing to monitor vehicle speeds in areas where speeding has been identified as a local concern. Details of vehicles travelling above the speed limit will be submitted to the police, enabling advisory letters to be issued and, where necessary, supporting further enforcement activity.
This initiative is about far more than recording speeding vehicles. It is about creating safer streets, encouraging responsible driving and strengthening the partnership between the police and the communities we serve.
The aims of Community Speed Watch are to:
✅ Reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads ✅ Encourage drivers to comply with speed limits ✅ Increase public awareness of the dangers of inappropriate speed ✅ Improve the quality of life for residents living in affected areas ✅ Build stronger partnerships between local communities and the police
The purpose of the scheme is not to catch as many offenders as possible. Its true success will be measured by safer roads, lower vehicle speeds and increased awareness that driving at excessive speed through residential communities is unacceptable.
Every time a driver slows down, every time a family feels safer crossing the road, and every time a resident sees positive action being taken in their area, we move one step closer to creating the kind of community we all want to live in.
If you are passionate about road safety and would like to make a real difference in Altrincham, we would love to hear from you.
This is your opportunity to help shape a safer future for our neighbourhoods.
