L-plates off, job done! Or is it?
Once a young person has passed their driving test you’ll likely be breathing a sigh of relief that your unofficial and unpaid taxi service is no longer needed, but you can help continue their learning by keeping the conversations about driving ongoing. Those early months of independent driving are when they will be further developing their experience and judgement of risk – both things you can help them do safely:
🔹- Support them in building experience gradually – including driving at night, on rural roads and in different weather conditions. 🔹- Agree sensible boundaries – around passengers and late-night driving, particularly while experience is still developing. 🔹- Use a parent-young driver agreement – agree expectations and boundaries together, while gradually increasing independence as they get more experienced. 🔹- Give them a way out – make clear they can always call home for a lift if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable with someone’s driving.
🔵 These are just a few ideas to discuss to keep your young people safe. Enforcement should always be the last option, prevention is our priority.
