Local Priorities Hate Crime (a crime motivated by disability, racial, religious, sexual, or other prejudice) Message

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Hate Crime (a crime motivated by disability, racial, religious, sexual, or other prejudice), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

As part of Hate Crime Awareness Week, I want to remind everyone that no person should have to suffer alone because of hatred, prejudice, or discrimination.

If you have been affected by a hate crime or hate incident, please report it to South Wales Police. We are here to listen, support, and investigate matters reported to us. By reporting, you can help us take action and prevent others from becoming victims.

Hate has no place in our communities. If you need us, please get in touch.

A hate crime is defined as any criminal offence that is perceived to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on disability, race, religion, transgender identity, or sexual orientation. This includes causing harassment, alarm, or distress.

Hate incidents:

Not all behaviour complained of will reach the threshold for being defined as a crime and therefore may be categorised as a non-crime hate incident (NCHI). This means an incident or alleged incident which involves or is alleged to involve an act by a person which is perceived to be motivated - wholly or partly - by hostility or prejudice towards persons with a particular characteristic.

A “particular characteristic”, for the purposes of NCHI recording, means a characteristic that is protected under hate crime legislation:

If you are a victim of hate crime, or supporting someone who is, there are specialist support groups, in addition to Victim Support, including Stop Hate UK and CATCH.

If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at https://www.south-wales.police.uk, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
