#ScamWarning | Cryptocurrency investment fraud is one of the fastest growing types of fraud in the UK.
Fraudsters often use social media adverts, fake investment platforms and even celebrity endorsements to convince people to part with their money.
Staffordshire Police are seeing an increase in reports of these types of scams, with criminals targeting people through online adverts, social media and messaging platforms.
⚠️ Signs to look out for: - Unexpected contact about an investment opportunity. - Pressure to invest quickly or risk "missing out". - Promises of high or guaranteed returns with little or no risk. - Professional-looking websites or apps that appear legitimate. - Requests to transfer money or buy cryptocurrency urgently.
Remember: If an investment sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
🫂 How to protect yourself and your loved ones: - Take time to research any investment opportunity. - Be cautious of adverts and investment advice found on social media. - Verify that firms offering crypto products are authorised or registered and check them on the Financial Services Register. - Speak to someone you trust before investing large sums of money. - Never allow yourself to be rushed into making financial decisions.
🤔 If you think you're being scammed: - Stop all communication with the suspected scammer. - Do not send any more money. - Contact your bank immediately if you have transferred funds. - Keep records of messages, emails and transactions.
✋ If you have been scammed: - Contact your bank immediately. - Report it as soon as possible. - In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, report to Report Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.
