Hate Crime Awareness Week 2026 Engagement with Islington Somali Community

See the latest update on hate crime locally—we’re aware and taking action.

As part of Hate Crime Awareness Week, officers from the Finsbury Park Safer Neighbourhood Team were pleased to join members of the Islington Somali community and other local residents at a community engagement event aimed at raising awareness of hate crime and promoting community cohesion.
The event provided an opportunity for officers to deliver a presentation explaining what constitutes a hate crime, how to recognise the signs and impact of such incidents, and the importance of reporting them. Residents were also informed about the different ways to report hate crime and the support available to victims.
Officers highlighted how reporting hate crime helps police and partner agencies better understand community concerns, identify emerging issues, and secure the necessary resources to prevent and tackle these offences effectively. By working together, we can help ensure that everyone feels safe, respected, and supported within our communities.
The session included an open question-and-answer discussion, allowing residents to raise concerns, seek advice, and learn more about local policing priorities. Officers welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with attendees and provide reassurance on matters affecting the local community.
The Finsbury Park Safer Neighbourhood Team would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to the event. The engagement was a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships with local residents, increase awareness of hate crime, and reinforce our commitment to keeping our neighbourhoods safe and inclusive for all.
If you experience or witness a hate crime, please report it to the police or through the appropriate reporting channels. Every report matters and helps us take action against hate crime in our communities.

Hatred and violence have no place in our city.

When someone is assaulted or abused due to their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or whether they are transgender, then a hate crime may have occurred, and you should report this to the police.

We are committed to a Met that is completely anti-discriminatory and treats all Londoners fairly – policing without fear or favour.

We have recently announced the launch of our brand-new Community Protection Teams, bringing together neighbourhood, specialist and counter terrorism officers together to tackle hate in all of its forms.

More details of what counts as a hate crime or incident can be found on our website, as well as tool to report hate crime specifically, including if it was online.

Alternatively, you can stay 100% anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
