Burglary Prevention

Burglary Prevention

Hello Resident

As we move into the autumn and winter months, we typically see an increase in burglary offences across the county. The longer hours of darkness can provide offenders with more opportunities to target properties.

Neighbourhood officers will be increasing patrols in the area and carrying out proactive work to identify and disrupt offenders. However, there are also several simple steps residents can take to make their homes less attractive to burglars.

Home Security Tips

Ensure all doors and windows are locked, even when you are at home or only leaving for a short period.

Consider installing bright external security lighting, particularly around entrances, driveways and side access routes. Motion-activated lighting can be an effective deterrent.

CCTV and video doorbells can help deter offenders and provide valuable evidence if a crime does occur.

Keep hedges and shrubs trimmed to remove potential hiding places near doors and windows.

Make your home appear occupied when away by using timer switches on lights.

Protecting Your Valuables

Burglars will often search common hiding places such as:

Under beds

Bottom drawers

Wardrobes

Bedside cabinets

Valuable items such as jewellery, cash, important documents and high-value electronics should be stored securely. Consider using a home safe that is securely fixed to the building. Avoid keeping large amounts of cash at home wherever possible.

Vehicle Security

Remove valuables from vehicles or place them out of sight.

Ensure vehicles are locked and windows fully closed.

Keep keys away from doors, windows and letterboxes, and consider using a signal-blocking pouch for keyless vehicles.

Keep keyless car enables car keys in a faraday bag AT ALL TIMES when not in use.

Report Suspicious Activity

If you see suspicious behaviour, vehicles, or individuals in your neighbourhood, please report it. Information from residents can be vital in identifying offenders and preventing crime.

999 in an emergency or if a crime is in progress.

101 for non-emergency matters.

Report online via the Hertfordshire Constabulary website.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

By working together and taking a few simple precautions, we can significantly reduce the risk of burglary and help keep our community safe.

Kind Regards
