Local Mobile phone theft and illegal e-bikes operation

Local Mobile phone theft and illegal e-bikes operation

Here’s the latest on mobile phone theft in your area.

Mobile phone theft and snatch offences were identified as a significant concern across Tower Hamlets, impacting community safety and public confidence. There were also concerns that stolen phones were being sold through second-hand phone retailers and that offenders were using illegal e-bikes to commit offences and evade police.

In September, Tower Hamlets Neighbourhood Policing Teams worked alongside Tower Hamlets Council Trading Standards officers as part of a national operation targeting mobile phone-related crime. Activity included intelligence-led high-visibility patrols, proactive plain-clothes deployments, operations targeting phone snatch offenders and illegal e-bikes, joint inspections of second-hand phone shops, and partnership work to identify outstanding suspects.

Outcome

The operation achieved significant results and helped disrupt criminal activity:

29 shops visited and inspected.
291 mobile phones checked against IMEI databases to identify stolen devices.
1 stolen phone recovered and returned to the investigation process.
3 phones seized for further enquiries.
3 arrests made.
60 wraps of Class A drugs recovered, resulting in one male being arrested and charged with a supply offence.
5 laptops recovered that had been stolen during a school burglary.
Over £6,000 worth of counterfeit goods seized, including mobile phone accessories, backpacks, keyrings, unsafe travel adapters and illicit tobacco products.
A quantity of illicit cigarettes seized.
A large amount of drug paraphernalia recovered, leading to an investigation into a shop owner.
5 illegal e-bikes and 1 scooter seized, with 5 riders prosecuted and 1 person arrested.
8 previously unidentified suspects linked to reported offences were identified.

This operation demonstrated effective partnership working, proactive policing and problem-solving, resulting in the disruption of organised criminality, the recovery of stolen property, arrests of offenders and increased reassurance for the local community. It also helped prevent further offences and strengthen intelligence relating to mobile phone theft across the borough.

We’ve put hundreds more officers on the frontlines of community crime-fighting teams, upping visible patrols in the right ‘hot spots’ so we can deter and catch criminals. These officers are working hard to bear down on mobile phone crime in London, arresting phone thieves on the street, shutting down vendors trading stolen devices and dismantling international criminal gangs.

We have now almost halved phone theft in Westminster, where it was most concentrated, following an intensive crackdown which has seen hundreds of arrests and thousands of phones recovered. After campaigning by the Met, Apple has also made a global change to its security system that better ensures stolen phones cannot be reused or resold – disrupting a highly organised international business model worth millions.

But we know there is more to do. That’s why we’re stepping up our use of technology, increasing our operations and working with phone companies to make it less appealing for criminals to commit these crimes in the first place.

We want your help to shape the future of policing across London. We are seeking your views on our new inclusion strategy to ensure that the Met is a police service that is trusted, representative and more effective at keeping London safe. You can have your say on our Inclusion Strategy consultation which runs until Thursday 26 November.
