E-Scooters

Yesterday, officers PC Skelton and PCSO Thom were on patrol on Uttoxeter road, where they spotted an e-scooter being illegally driven dangerously in the middle of the road, which was obstructing traffic and was unbelievably towing a trailer on the back of it. Officers promptly bought the male to a safe stop and seized the vehicle under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, resulting in the permanent destruction of the vehicle. 
E-scooters are legally classified as mechanically propelled vehicles, which when are driven on public roads, requires the same legal requirements as any other motor vehicle, such as MOT, Licensing and Insurance. E-scooters cannot be legally registered or insured, making riding them on public roads, cycle paths or pavement a criminal offence. 

E-scooters are only permitted to be driven on private land, with the land owner’s permission. 
The law remains clear that e-scooters  being ridden in public spaces remains illegal, and riders can face penalties such as a fine, penalty points on a driving licence and court prosecution for traffic offences
