โ ๏ธ E-Scooters & E-Bikes: Know the Law โ ๏ธ
The Metropolitan Police Service is seeing an increasing number of incidents involving e-scooters and e-bikes being ridden in an anti-social and dangerous manner.
Many parents and guardians purchase these vehicles without realising there are legal restrictions on where and how they can be used.
๐ซ Did you know? โข Privately owned e-scooters, and some e-bikes, cannot be used on public roads, pavements or in public spaces. โข Modified or illegally adapted e-bikes may be treated as motor vehicles under law. โข Riders can be reported for offences including careless driving, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, and anti-social use. โข Police have powers to stop and seize vehicles being used unlawfully. โข Seized vehicles may not be returned, and owners could face recovery fees, fines and court proceedings.
๐ We have received reports of e-scooters and e-bikes being ridden dangerously near pedestrians, schools, parks and shopping areas. These actions put both riders and members of the public at risk of serious injury.
๐ We are also seeing an increase in thefts and robberies involving e-scooters and e-bikes, making personal safety an important consideration for owners.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Advice for parents and guardians: โ Check any e-bike purchased complies with UK legislation. โ Supervise children using these vehicles and discuss personal safety. โ Talk about road safety and responsible behaviour. โ Ensure children understand that vehicles can be seized if used illegally.
Our priority is to educate young people, prevent harm and keep our communities safe. However, where offences are committed, enforcement action will be taken.
