National Hate Crime Awareness Week: Speak Up Against Hate

National Hate Crime Awareness Week: Speak Up Against Hate

See the latest update on hate crime locally—we’re aware and taking action.

On 17th October, PCSOs held a National Hate Crime Awareness Week (NHCAW) event on Brick Lane, E1.

We gave away free merchandise while speaking to members of the public about recognising hate crime and how to report it.

Hate crime isn't always reported. Some people may not realise what has happened to them is a hate crime, while others may worry about not being believed or feel that reporting won't make a difference.

Every conversation is an opportunity to challenge prejudice, answer questions and help people feel more confident about seeking support.

Hate crime awareness shouldn't stop when the week ends. We can all play a part by challenging discrimination, treating others with respect and supporting anyone affected by hate.

How to report a hate crime:

By phone:
- 999 – In an emergency.
- 101 – For non-emergencies.

Online:
- Report a crime to the Met Police: "Met Police online crime reporting" (https://www.met.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/
- Report hate crime through True Vision: "True Vision – Report It" (https://www.report-it.org.uk)

Support and awareness:
- 17-24-30 National Hate Crime Awareness Week (https://nationalhcaw.uk) — Charity No. 1184819.

Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and supported. If you experience or witness hate crime, help is available.

Hatred and violence have no place in our city.

When someone is assaulted or abused due to their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or whether they are transgender, then a hate crime may have occurred, and you should report this to the police.

We are committed to a Met that is completely anti-discriminatory and treats all Londoners fairly – policing without fear or favour.

We have recently announced the launch of our brand-new Community Protection Teams, bringing together neighbourhood, specialist and counter terrorism officers together to tackle hate in all of its forms.

More details of what counts as a hate crime or incident can be found on our website, as well as tool to report hate crime specifically, including if it was online.

Alternatively, you can stay 100% anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

We want your help to shape the future of policing across London. We are seeking your views on our new inclusion strategy to ensure that the Met is a police service that is trusted, representative and more effective at keeping London safe. You can have your say on our Inclusion Strategy consultation which runs until Thursday 26 November.
