A private tutor who possessed thousands of indecent images of children and sexually abused a nine-year-old girl who was preparing for her 11-plus exam has been jailed.
Kevin Doig, 64 (13.04.60) was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court to two years and two months on Thursday, 15 October after pleading guilty to sexual activity with a child under the age of 13 and making indecent images of children. He was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
Doig had been employed by the victim's mother to provide private tuition between September 2024 and March 2025.
The offences came to light on 5, March 2025 when the child disclosed to her mother that during tutoring sessions Doig would place her on his lap and touch her in a sexual manner under their clothing.
Her mother immediately reported the matter to police, triggering an investigation by specialist Met detectives.
Detective Sergeant Callum Mantell who led the investigation, said: “Doig abused his position of trust to sexually abuse a child who had been placed in his care for educational support.
"The victim in this case showed tremendous courage in speaking about what happened to her. Thanks to her bravery, and the support of her family, a dangerous offender has been brought to justice.
"This was a thorough and complex investigation. Detectives secured the victim's account, gathered independent witness testimony and carried out detailed digital forensic examinations which uncovered thousands of indecent images of children.
“Every child deserves to be safe online, and every victim deserves support. As online child abuse investigations continue to grow, we are using every available tool to identify victims and safeguard children faster, and we have invested in child-friendly interview suites across London to ensure young victims feel safe and supported.”
Detectives launched extensive enquiries, working closely with the victim and her family to secure vital evidence of the abuse. The victim was supported throughout the investigation by specially trained officers experienced in working with child victims of crime. Her account was obtained in a child-friendly Video Recorded Interview (VRI) suite, with the assistance of a Registered Intermediary to help facilitate communication and ensure she was able to give her best evidence.
Social services were briefly involved in the case, however safeguarding and victim engagement were primarily led by the police throughout the investigation.
A detailed forensic examination of the devices seized from his home uncovered 2,585 still images and 30 moving images of children being sexually abused across seven devices.
Doig was arrested on 14, March 2025. Officers subsequently executed a search of his home address and seized 11 electronic devices for forensic examination.
Appeal
Detectives are now appealing for anyone, particularly parents, who may have had contact with Doig in a tutoring, educational or mentoring capacity to come forward.
Detective Constable Caroline Crane added "Doig worked as a private tutor and had access to children through that role. We are keen to hear from anyone who may have had contact with him and who may have information that could assist our enquiries.
"We understand that reporting abuse can be extremely difficult, particularly when it happened some time ago, but anyone who comes forward will be listened to and supported by specially trained officers."
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting CAD 2428/21Oct. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
