Glossop SNT - School Engagenent
PCSO Buller from the Youth Engagement Team was invited to attend Hadfield Nursery School, Queens Street, Hadfield today, Wednesday 4th November (both in the morning and again in the afternoon), to have an informal chat with the young children in attendance there today.
The Nursery school provides early years education and care for children aged 2 to 5 years old.
🔴 We talked about being safe ▪️On holding mummy or daddies hands when outside.incluing adults, or older siblings. ▪️We learnt about ‘Stop-Look -listen’ when crossing the road. ▪️We talked about wearing bright clothes in winter time or when it is dark - so we can be seen. ▪️We talked about Bonfire Night, about the loud noises and bright lights (fireworks) and keeping our pets indoors. ▪️We talked about the dangers of getting too close to a fire and what to do if you catch fire such as ‘Stop - Drop - Roll’.
A poster was left with the school to pass onto to parents about bonfire safety and we have attached some essential tips for everyone below to view.
🍡 Sparklers should not be used by children under 5
✨ Composition: They consist of a rigid metal wire coated with a slow-burning chemical mixture containing a metallic fuel (such as iron, aluminium, or magnesium powder), an oxidiser, and a combustible binder. ✨ Combustion: When lit, the oxidiser releases oxygen to fuel the reaction, ejecting tiny burning metal fragments that glow brightly until the metal is completely oxidized. ✨ Temperature: A sparkler burns at extremely high temperatures—typically between 1,000°C and 1,600°C (1,830°F–2,912°F)—which is hot enough to melt certain metals.
Age Limit: Never give sparklers to children under 5 years old. Children aged 5 to 15 should always be actively supervised by an adult. Water Bucket: Keep a bucket of cold water or sand nearby. Drop spent sparklers straight into the water—never touch or pick up a used sparkler with bare hands, as the metal stays dangerously hot long after the flame goes out. Arm's Length: Light one sparkler at a time using a jet-flame torch (matches do not burn hot enough) and hold it at arm’s length, away from hair, clothing, and other people.
🔥 If the worst happens and clothing catches fire, remember the below lifesaving advice:
🛑 STOP - Don't run ⬇️ DROP - Get to the ground 🔄 ROLL - Back and forth until the flames are out.
A big thank you to the head and staff from Hadfield Nursery School for their kind invitation today and lastly an even bigger thank you to the young children who engaged very well for little people.
