November is a time of celebration for many communities, with Bonfire Night and Diwali both bringing opportunities to come together with family, friends and neighbours. Bonfire Night, celebrated across the UK on or around 5 November, commemorates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a group of conspirators attempted to blow up Parliament. Today, it is marked with bonfires, fireworks displays and community events. Diwali, celebrated by many Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities, is the festival of lights and symbolises the triumph of light over darkness. Fireworks are sometimes used as part of those celebrations as well, and this year Diwali falls on 8 November. While many people enjoy the colour, spectacle and excitement of fireworks displays, others may find the noise challenging, particularly young children, older people and animals. Whatever your plans, a little planning and consideration can go a long way towards preventing accidents, reducing unnecessary disruption and helping everyone stay safe during the celebrations. Below, you'll find our advice as well as guidance and resources to help you celebrate responsibly and keep your community safe.
General advice
Buy fireworks from licensed and reputable retailers, ensure they carry the CE or UKCA mark and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
