Welcome Newham - One Stop

Welcome Newham - One Stop

This morning PCSO's paid a visit to Stratford library to meet staff at the Welcome Newham  One-Stop Shop.

The One-Stop Shop is a dedicated service designed to support newly arrived residents including refugees and asylum seekers.

It operates as an in-person drop-in service providing support with essential registration tasks like GP registration, housing advice, school applications and benefit claims.

This service is for people across the whole of Newham.

A very interesting introductory meeting, we learned about some of the issues facing those newly arrived in London - not least suspicions  around authority and people wearing uniforms.

Staff are very keen to break down barriers as a means of increasing levels of personal self confidence and police officers and staff are encouraged to attend.

Pictured are Kerry Wood and Kellie Tonkyn who head Refugee Resettlement and Afework, originally from Ethiopia but who now helps as a volunteer.
