Good evening Resident
It has been a few weeks since the last storm battered Scarborough and it is fair to say, we had a lot of rain. It is likely that we will continue to get this weather throughout the winter. Scarborough was in the headlines on social media, with many TikTok videos showing the flooding. This may increase the interest of rogue traders to visit the area. Rogue traders often offer to fix what seems like a small problem, before putting pressure on people to pay for larger jobs, which aren’t necessary or which may not even exist. They may use the recent flooding to sell products which residents don’t need, such as pumps or extra walls on their property. The work can include and not limited to roofing, plumbing, gardening, paving and gardening. Quite a few years ago in Scarborough, a rogue trader claimed that there was damage to a few roof tiles on a house. They offered to sort the issue for £150 as they were working in the area. The elderly resident let them go up to the roof, where they almost instantly came down again with photos of mass damage to an area of roof which was unable to be seen from the road. The rogue traders told the resident that it would cost £8000 to fix the work. The resident rang his daughter who told him to cease contact with the traders, phone the police and she was on her way. As the resident told the traders he was calling the police, they left. This is a regular method used by rogue traders. You can report rogue traders to Trading Standards, by calling 0808 223 1133. If you believe a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger, call police on 999. You can call to report suspicious doorstep callers or rogue trader incidents via 101.
